4. The ability to overcome gravity through intelligent
application of muscular force directly to an object.
5. A basic life skill enabling most day-to-day activity,
such as picking up a child and tying your shoes.
6. A group of exercises consisting of over a dozen
ways to achieve strength, power and endurance.
7. The ultimate test of strength and the foundation
of any functional exercise and training program.
8. The most effective and efficient way to improve
cardio-vascular, pulmonary and muscular fitness.
You may be surprised that the most effective exercise known
to man is also the oldest and most intuitive. The act of lifting
something off the ground stretches back to the very dawn of
human evolution, when our predecessors first lifted their own
weight and stood erect. In fact, until recently, the ability to lift
had a lot to do with one's success in life, not even to mention
safety. As a result, the Deadlift is our birthright, as intrinsic to
humanity as consciousness and thought itself.
While most of us no longer depend on intense physical effort
for survival, the ability to stand tall and proud remains just as
essential today as it was millennia ago. What shaped us will
now save us. Deadlifting builds bone and muscular strength
along with coordination, posture, and abdominal pressure, all
of which can prevent problems from the hips and lower back
up to the neck and shoulders – and everywhere in-between,
including a 600-horsepower heart and super-charged lungs.
For the multitudes enslaved to a sedentary lifestyle, there is
nothing like the Deadlift to reconnect them to our origins as
physical beings. For the athletes, the Deadlift develops the
posterior-chain that is critical to generating power in motion.
With many varieties to choose from for every body type and
character, the Deadlift offers everything for everyone.
The various styles of deadlift emphasize different parts of the
strength-speed continuum and promote even development of
the body's largest muscles, as well as cardio and endurance.
